Turbotex is made by Max Zhang. This page explains what Turbotex stores, where your work goes, and how to have it removed. Send questions and requests to 06max.zhang@gmail.com.
The desktop app
Projects in the desktop app stay on your computer unless you make them cloud projects or request a review, both of which need an account. Compiling, the PDF preview and Figure Maker all run on your computer. Turbotex collects no analytics. The app keeps a diagnostic log on your computer. When the app hits a critical error, such as a crash, it sends Turbotex that error, the app version and your operating system, and the diagnostic records just before it, which never include document text. The rest of the log is shared only if you export it and send it yourself.
The app also contacts these services, which see your IP address but not your documents:
- downloads.wrkrsh.com, to check for and download updates.
- logs.wrkrsh.com, to report critical errors.
- Tectonic's package server, to fetch TeX packages the first time a document uses them.
- GitHub and the Python Package Index, to install Python and its packages the first time you use Figure Maker.
AI
The agent runs on your own ChatGPT account through Codex. When you ask it something, your prompt and the parts of your project it needs (source text, compile logs, figure images) go straight from your computer to OpenAI under your account and OpenAI's terms. Turbotex does not receive or store them.
Accounts
You don't need an account for the desktop app. Accounts are invite-only. WorkOS handles sign-in and stores your email address, name and sign-in history; Turbotex keeps a copy of your email address and name with your projects. Joining the waitlist gives WorkOS your email address.
Cloud projects and the web app
Cloud projects, including their source files and images, are stored with Convex. The web app runs on Cloudflare, which logs each request's path, method and status so problems can be traced. Compiling in the web app sends the project's files to Turbotex's compile service on Railway, which keeps them only while your editing session lasts.
Review links
Requesting a review uploads the compiled PDF and a copy of the paper's TeX sources. Anyone with the link can read them and leave feedback until you close the link or it expires after 30 days. Reviewers' names, comments, annotations and suggested edits are stored with the review and shown to you. Closing a link stops access but keeps the copy. Deleting your account removes it, and so does deleting the cloud project it came from.
Cookies and browser storage
The web app uses encrypted cookies only to sign you in and keep you signed in. Your browser's storage holds recent diagnostic records, which you can export when reporting a problem, and the unsent draft of a review you are writing. A critical error in the web app is sent to Turbotex with your browser and the records just before it, as in the desktop app. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.
Deleting your data
To delete your account, email 06max.zhang@gmail.com from the address you sign in with. Deleting your account removes your sign-in, your cloud projects and their files, your review links with their copies and PDFs, and the reviews you received. Deleting a cloud project yourself removes its files and reviews. Projects on your computer are yours to keep or delete.
Service providers
WorkOS (accounts), Convex (cloud projects and reviews), Cloudflare (web app and downloads) and Railway (compiling) process data on Turbotex's behalf. Turbotex does not sell your data or share it with anyone else.
